7 business lessons from Oprah

Posted on 01 January 2016

Oprah Winfrey is a self-made CEO, one of the greatest philanthropists of our time and the most influential woman in the world.    She chose to not just be another talk show host but to adapt a mindset that made her, in my humble opinion, a living legend. I’ve listed 7 inspiring business (and really life in general) lessons we can all learn from her down below to help you live your best life.

“I had no idea that being your authentic self could make me as rich as I’ve become. If I had, I’d have done it a lot earlier.” Oprah Winfrey

Oprah has been captivating audiences for decades and is known for her unique style of interviewing people. She's built an empire on her authentic approach to business and with her what you see is what you get. The lesson here is to always be yourself, whatever career you choose to pursue. Find something that fits you like a glove and allows you to be your authentic self.  If you feel like your job is a round hole and you’re a square peg, it’s time to make a change!

“Excellence is the best deterrent to racism or sexism.”

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah became the first black female news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC-TV in the 70s.  A decade later she was the host of The Oprah Winfrey Show – the award-winning-number-one  talk show in America.

Oprah knew she wasn't want TV producers wanted, being a black woman she didn't fit the mold of what a talkshow looked like in that era. She could've given up but instead she chose to work hard and fight prejudice by being the absolute best in her industry. Be so good that people can't ignore you or your talents, and you will succeed.

“Your gut is your inner compass. Whenever you have to consult with other people for an answer, you’re headed in the wrong direction.”

Oprah Winfrey

Sometimes a rational way of making a decision doesn't lead to the right choice for you. Oprah is a strong believer in listening to your instincts and basing decisions on her gut feeling like deciding to retire from her own show.

“I feel that luck is preparation meeting opportunity.”

Oprah Winfrey

Every entrepreneur hopes for that one big break that catapults them to great success, but if you spend more time hoping than preparing your next business move than that huge opportunity won't come. Luck is made through hard work and preparation, it is not given to you by just sitting around and hoping that someone else helps you out. Are you fully committed to prepare for ''Luck''?

“The surest way to bring goodness to yourself is to make it your intention to do good for somebody else.”

Oprah Winfrey

Miss Winfrey is not only a media mogul but also a great philanthropist. Oprah has made a positive impact in the lives of many people around the world. By giving back to others we demonstrate our values, and encourage others to do the same. Whether you call it karma or God, or both, doing good brings more good into your life.

“We’re each responsible for our own life. No one else is or even could be.”

Oprah Winfrey

A lot of people have adapted to a passive way of thinking about their life. They believe things happen to them and there's not really anything they can do about it.

Oprah has never believed that for herself; “I don’t think of myself as a poor deprived ghetto girl who made good. I think of myself as somebody who from an early age knew I was responsible for myself, and I had to make good.”

You’re responsible for your life, your actions and your decisions. You choose what you do with your talents, it is your gift to the world.

“The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.”

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah took her staff and their families on a vacation to Hawaii. It was her way of thanking ''the best crew in television'' as she calls them for two decades of hard work. Gratitude opens the door to more success, give thanks as often as you can and watch your life change.
